NECO Literature in English Exam Structure

Paper 1: Multiple choice

Paper 1 is the first part of your NECO Literature exam. It consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and is structured as follows:

Question Breakdown:

  • 20 questions on general knowledge of literature
  • 5 questions on an unseen prose passage
  • 20 context questions based on the prescribed Shakespearean text

Time & Marks:

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Total Marks: 50

Paper 2: Essay Test

Paper 2 focuses on prose analysis and tests your understanding of the novels you’ve studied.

Structure:

Divided into two sections:

Section A: African Prose

Section B: Non-African Prose

  • You are to answer one question from each section

What’s Expected:

  • Each question carries 25 marks
  • You’ll have 1 hour 15 minutes to complete both

Paper 3: Drama and Poetry

Paper 3 tests your knowledge of the drama and poetry texts you’ve studied. It is designed to assess your understanding and interpretation of both African and Non-African literary works.

This paper is divided into four sections:

Section B: Non-African Drama

Section C: African Poetry

Section D: Non-African Poetry

Each section contains two questions, but you are required to:

  • Answer one question from each section
  • That makes a total of four questions

Time & Marks:

  • Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Each question carries: 25 marks
  • Total marks: 100
